Bots are automated programs which visit websites to perform a specified function. Whether a bot is labeled good or bad depends upon source and function. An excellant example is that most webmasters welcome Google to frequently index their websites. Most webmasters would agree that the Google bots are a okay or good thing (Yahoo bots, MSN bots, and similar are included with in this example). An example of a bad bot is one which attempts to write ad links to Forums, Guestbooks, and Reviews (this is often called a spam bot). Some indexing bots are abusive to the website they are indexing and cause problems for both the human viewers and the website servers (often from obscure "search engines").
